Blockbuster Queue

I have finally rated enough movies on Blockbuster.com to get good recommendations from them. Usually, Blockbuster recommends things that are way off track, mostly R-rated (which I rarely watch), and things that I would never watch, even if it were just to be social (which is a reason that gets me to do a lot of things). But finally, today, my Blockbuster queue was surprisingly great! Lots of good movies, some of which I had not seen before, and most of which I wouldn't mind watching even if it were just me at home. Hooray!

Do any of you do Blockbuster online? How about movies you've seen recently that you'd recommend?

  1. We're big fans of the Dollar Movie Box at Kroger, so we haven't signed up for this yet.
But, what has been your favorite recommendation that you hadn't thought of on your own?

  2. We have had Netflix since May of 2006 and I love getting new movies every few days! Their recommendations are a little wonky, though.

Just to let you know up front:
we're mostly big sci-fi, kung-fu dorks around here. That being said...

I'm a big fan of TV series on DVD because I hate commercials and I don't like having to wait for new seasons. My all-time favorite ever is Firefly and the prequel movie that was released after the series, Serenity. We're working our way through The 4400 right now and I like it a lot, and I'm waiting for the last season of Battlestar Galactica to come out on DVD. I tried Ugly Betty, but didn't like it. The kids have been on a Batman Beyond kick lately. That, and Samurai Jack.

Some of the movies we've seen and liked were:
In the Name of the King
    Bee Movie
    The Water Horse
    The Astronaut Farmer
    Ratatouille
    Meet the Robinsons
    The Last Mimzy
    Deja Vu
Last Holiday (Queen Latifah - really good movie, and John even liked it)
Though None Go With Me (made me cry - excellent movie, but John wouldn't watch it with me)
    The Librarian (1 and 2)
    Nanny McPhee
    Any Mystery Science Theater 3000
    Dead Poets Society
    Danny Deckchair
    Elizabethtown
    Radio (I cried)
The kids love the IMAX videos, too (Deep Sea, Blue Planet)
Thou Shalt Laugh (pretty funny Christian stand-up)
    Dune (1984 version, not 2000)
    Children of Dune (2003)

We (mostly John) also like movies with Jason Statham, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, people like that, usually in movies I call "beat-em-up" and "shoot-em-up" movies

    Movies we didn't like:
    Cloverfield
Eragon (terrible if you've read the book first, not bad if you haven't, though)
Harry Potter (not really huge fans, though we've seen them all)
    Series of Unfortunate Events
Beowulf (ICK - too gory and we turned it off about halfway through - the English major in me cringed at how they interpreted the text)

We always prescreen anything that isn't G-rated animation for the kids. Sometimes they get mad when we won't let them watch a movie. That's too bad, though.
